5 great reasons to Eurail or Interrail in Spain
From cities bursting with awesome architecture and unmissable landmarks, to gorgeous unspoiled islands just a ferry ride away, to incredible sandy beaches to relax on – it is no surprise at all the Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world, bringing in over 75 million tourists in 2016 alone. Here’s our top 5 reasons why we think you would love to Interrail or Eurail in Spain.
Weather
Architecture
All over Spain, there are a plethora of historical and architectural masterpieces for you to see and appreciate. The largest Gothic cathedral in the world can be found in Seville, and Barcelona is littered with the influence of Antoni Gaudi, including the unfinished but marvellous Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familía.
Football/soccer fans will also not want to miss the opportunity to see the gigantic Nou Camp stadium, where FC Barcelona play their home games.
The tour offered by this club offers you the chance to explore all around the stadium and appreciate its magnificence – with approximately 100,000 seats, it is one of the biggest stadia in the world.
Siestas
Ah, the siesta. Or to describe it in slightly less Mediterranean terms, the afternoon nap.
Siestas take place all over Spain in the mid-afternoon, allowing those who are weary from sustaining themselves in the scorching heat since early morning an opportunity to rest up for a couple of hours, before heading into the early evening with fresh vigor.
Perfect for working people, but also ideal if you have spent the morning exploring and seeing the sights – grab a quick siesta and enjoy your evenings to the fullest!
Parties
Fancy letting your hair down and getting your dancing shoes on? You can’t go far wrong with the judgment free party hotspot at Magaluf – found on the island of Mallorca, which is easily accessible via ferry from several locations including Spain and Valencia.
If you are a true party animal, then you can also spend some time in Ibiza – particularly during the Summer months, this place is truly spectacular and will give you plenty of stories to take home from your Interrail journey!
Beaches & Islands
Aside from the aforementioned island of Mallorca, Spain also offers a large number of smaller islands which can be visited on day trips. If getting away to a quiet island for some chilling out time is on your list, then you’ll want to check out the Isla Cíes National Park.
Take a quick boat ride from the North-West coast to this island and you will find on of the world’s most beautiful beaches, complete with white sands, turquoise waters, and that indescribably calming sound of waves softly crashing in the background.

Choose your pass now! With Eurail – Spain and the rest of Europe is closer than ever!
Visiting, exploring, and enjoying Spain and the rest of Europe has never been so easy, cheap and convenient. If you are living in Europe right now, then it’s as easy as can be – just buy your Interrail Spain Pass, or Interrail Global Pass, and get going! If you’re from the UK, you can still do this – recently Interrail changed their rules, allowing a single return journey to take place in your country of origin, enabling you to take the Eurostar to mainland Europe at the start of your Interrail journey, and back to the UK once you’re done (booking in advance is required).
If you are from another part of the world such as the US, Australia, Canada, or if you are from the UK and cannot reach your starting point by using the Eurostar, then unless you are already in Europe you will probably need to take a flight at the start of your journey. Once you’ve purchased your Eurail Spain Pass , check out some flight prices using the tool below:
Interrail Spain – what to do, where to go?
TMost experienced travellers will espouse the wisdom that lies in keeping your trip open to the possibility of spontaneity along the way. No matter how well you plan everything out, there is bound to be someone that you meet on your journey who has a brilliant idea for something to see or do, which had not occurred to you before. When this happens, you will be glad to have the flexibility to adjust your plans.
However, we know as well as anyone that when planning your Interrail or Eurail Spain trip, you will want to ensure you’ve got some great ideas in your back pocket, to make sure you get the most out of your experience. With that in mind, we’ve got some great places to share with you.
Valencia
Located to the East of the country in the eponymously-named region of Valencia, is the cultural city of Valencia. This superb city has a wealth of fantastic places to visit and see, two of which are alongside, or nearby the redirected Turia River. Firstly, the Turia Gardens, formed from the Turia’s former riverbed, which is the largest urban garden in Spain and features magnificent landscaping alongside attractions such as sports fields, skate parks, and giant chessboards. And secondly, the City of Arts and Sciences. Inside this modern architectural masterpiece sitting alongside the rerouted river, is a culture-vulture’s dream; including an aquarium, planetarium, opera house, and natural history museum (designed to resemble a whale skeleton, no less!).
Seville
Financial and cultural capital of the Andalucia region, Seville is a lively and interesting city which naturally boasts a great many tourist attractions which draw in visitors by the millions every year. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Grand Cathedral of Seville, where it is believed Christopher Columbus was laid to rest.
Architecture fans will also not want to miss the Alcazar of Seville, a complex of royal palaces, patios and gardens which combine the best influences of 11th century Muslim Moors, 13th century Gothicism, and the 14th century Mudéjar style. Once you’ve got your fill of architectural wonder, head over to Barrio Santa Cruz in the Old City, near the Guadalquivir River, for some Tapas in typical Spanish surroundings.
Madrid
Spain’s capital city is a buzzing hive of activity from sunrise to sunrise. Although well-known for having a big nightlife scene, there is also by no means a lack of things to see and do during the daytime. As with almost any capital city, there are plenty of landmarks to see – most notably the Royal Palace, which is still used by the monarch of Spain as a permanent residence.
Spend the morning getting some shopping done at the San Miguel Market in Plaza Mayor, and after your siesta, you will want to go and check out the Puerta del Sol – this is a large square which is used for festivals, important gatherings, and street performers. In all likelihood you will end up here at some point, as it also serves as the central hub of Madrid’s public transport network.
Tarifa
Take a break from the cities with a trip down to the Southern coast of Spain, where you will find this strip of sandy white beaches. The weather can get extremely warm in the Summer months, but this is tempered by strong winds which make Tarifa very popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, as well as non-aquatic kite enthusiasts. It’s a very chilled out place, and you can even see the Rif mountains of Africa off in the distance!
Canary Islands
Not to be confused with the Balearic Islands, which, among others, include Ibiza and Mallorca, the Canary Islands (or just ‘Canaries’ to their friends) are located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the South coast of Morocco.
Head to the Canary Islands for a great way to round off your Interrail journey, by basking on the gorgeous sandy beaches in the mild climate. If you want to see more than just beaches, the Maspalomas Dunes in Gran Canaria and the Teide Volcano in Tenerife are both highly popular natural attractions that are regularly visited by tourists throughout the year.
