Choose your Pass now!Interrail / Eurail Luxembourg – what to do, where to go?
Although all corners of the country are within easy reach and you can make the most of it in a few days, there are some gems you should not miss out while on your Interrail or Eurail Luxembourg journey.
Luxembourg City
Luxembourg City is a true treasure within impressive fortress walls. The medieval structures are very well-preserved and offer a great opportunity to wander around and soak the local vibe in. The Barrio Grund area holds some of the oldest settlement, from the 10th century, which is why it is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
For a wonderful panoramic view over the city, make sure to pass the Passarelle, the city’s old bridge. In fact, you can cross any bridge in Luxembourg and be amazed, as the scenery is beautiful wherever you go. The Notre Dame Cathedral is a wonder as well, with delicate arabesque designs.
Beaufort Castles
The two impressive castles are well hidden in the forest, which makes the road just as impressive as the destination. The Medieval Castle, or The Old Castle of Beaufort was build in four periods, starting from the early 11th century. Its value has been recognised from 1850, when it was declared a cultural heritage.
The Renaissance Castle was built in 1649 and has been inhabited until 2012 – talking about living like a modern prince. Starting from 2013, it has been made accessible to the public so prepare yourself for an amazing journey back in time.
Esch-zur-Alzette
The second-largest city in Luxembourg is a true gem for architecture enthusiasts. The buildings are so beautiful that they made a true attraction out of it – you can go on an architectural tour in the city centre and learn as much as possible.
The zoo is definitely worth a visit, and you can even get food for the animals from there. This way you can enjoy the local lifestyle and also the local wildlife. If you are lucky enough, you might even catch a concert at Rockhal Concert Hall. It should not be very hard since they host many events there.
Schengen
Schengen is now a synonym of ‘freedom of movement in Europe’ thanks to the Schengen Agreement signed in 1985. The city of Schengen now represents a historical destination, which is why they even opened a European Museum, which you can visit.
The region is also known for the tasty wines, with famous vineyards such as the one in Luxembourgish Moselle. The mild weather is perfect for wine-making and you can even go on tasting sessions with the locals and experience the “Coteaux de Schengen” varieties of wines. If you feel like exploring the surrounding areas, you can follow the hiking paths neighbouring the vineyards.
Remich
This is the ultimate wine-tasting experience. Remich is a small town located by the river Moselleand and represents a famous wine and trading centre. The place is also known as ‘The pearl of Moselle’, due to its famous wineries and view over the green spaces and vineyards.
Given its location by the river, the promenade is perfect for taking a relaxing stroll and for laying back and enjoying top-notch wine. For the more adventurous of you, you can go on a boat cruise or follow a hiking trail. If you happen to drop by during summer, you will be welcomed by the orchestra, as musicians take the stage every Sunday during summer months.

Is it safe?
Luxembourg is one of the safest countries in the world, thanks mainly to its tiny size and population. The biggest threat to tourists is generally pickpockets and purse snatching, which can both be prevented by taking minor precautions.
Regardless, it is always important to take care – try to avoid walking streets alone at night, and keep your valuables somewhere safe. If there’s no safe place at your hotel or hostel, keep them with you!
If you are concerned about something that could go wrong on your trip, we recommend taking a look at World Nomads Travel Insurance – it’s designed especially for travellers rather than typical holidaymakers.
