Why travel Europe by rail?

Although your Interrail Pass enables you to travel on multiple modes of public transport, you will still be spending the majority of your travel time on the rails. Here’s why that’s a good thing:

Travelling by train is the quintessential way to see mainland Europe. You can travel to virtually anywhere in the European continent via rail, exploring even the smallest towns and countless hidden treasures lurking in each country.

European trains are a comfortable and safe mode of transport that provides you with plenty of opportunity to leisurely enjoy the beautiful European scenery (ranging from the rolling hills of Norway to the frosted peaks of the Alps), on the way to your destination. Much better than looking at clouds through an aeroplane window!

You can even save money on hotel bills by taking an overnight train when you are traveling between two cities. For example, take a journey between Berlin and Budapest on the night train, and you can sleep in the compartment. This can also save you a journey on your Interrail Pass if you opt for one of the more limited options.

Many trains also have a restaurant or a café so you can enjoy a snack or a meal en-route. Sitting at a comfortable table seat with a coffee and a croissant, enjoying the view.. It sure beats being squeezed into an aeroplane or a crowded tour bus!

Contrary to common belief, taking a train is often faster than flying, particularly if you take lengthy check-in times and security screenings into consideration. Trains in Europe can run as fast as 200mph (the TGV in France being a prime example). It can take as little as 3 hours to get from London to Geneva, and less than 2.5 hours to go from London to Paris.

Travelling by train, you are subject to fewer rules and restrictions regarding luggage (check out our roundup of the best Interrail backpacks) – within reason, if you can carry it, you can bring it! There are no weight restrictions, and you can even bring along alcoholic drinks; just remember to be considerate with your fellow passengers, particularly on night trains.

You don’t need a cab to take you to the city itself since many trains have stations located in the city center. Plus, you have a wider range of travel options when you take the rails, since many of the most popular destinations in Europe are actually easier to get to by train. They have routes that offer multiple trips, and trains are always running regularly in busy areas.

Freedom To Roam

If you are backpacking through Europe, the Interrail Pass will give you the freedom that you need to create your itinerary as you go. Apart from anything else, it can save you from the constant bother of lining up at the station to buy point-to-point tickets to your next destination. Purchasing an Interrail Pass is simply an easier and more convenient way to take advantage of Europe’s extensive public transport network.

For example, the 30-Day Global Interrail Pass provides you with the flexibility to take any train you like, at any time, as well as enabling you to enjoy other benefits such as the use of participating ferry lines at no extra cost. Outside of your home country, you can take as many trips as you wish with the 30-Day Global Interrail Pass. Within your home country however, you can only take one incoming and outgoing trip.

Thus, you have the freedom to see Europe in the way that you wish. You can stay for as long or as short a time in a preferred destination as you want, and then just hop on a train to get to your next destination. Alternately, you can also create a more structured itinerary for your trip, to maximize your allotted travel days.

How Does Interrail Pass Work?

Your Interrail Pass will be delivered to your address by registered mail. The package should include the pass itself, along with:

  • a travel diary
  • a guide on how to use your Interrail Pass
  • a railway map, and
  • a protective wallet to safeguard all your travel documents.

Make sure that all your personal details are correct or your Interrail Pass will not be valid. You can take your first trip any time from the first day of validity shown on your Pass.

Interrail Global Pass Tips

Recording Journeys

Before you make each trip, you need to record your travel details in your diary. The diary includes fields for the date of the journey, your destination, and your starting point. The train conductor will sometimes ask to see your diary and if you have failed to fill it in, you may be subjected to a fine.

Although many conductors will forgive an honest mistake, it’s best not to chance it. If you get a lot of journeys in and your diary is full up, you can download and print out additional pages from the Interrail site.

Starting Your Journey

Once you have your pass, all you have to do is hop onto any train service that is run by the national rail operator, whether it is a local, suburban or regional route. Then you can sit on any unreserved seat and show your pass to the conductor if he asks you for it. You should pay no additional fees.

With some longer distance trains, you may need to make a reservation. But we advise that you reserve a seat anyway to ensure your comfort during your trip, since you probably don’t want to be standing up throughout the entire journey.

Specific trains may require you to reserve a seat in advance, including night and high-speed trains, as well as virtually every route in Spain, France, and Italy. You will pay a fee to make a reservation; however, if you have a Premium pass, you can use the Interrail online service to reserve for free.

Usually, when you book ahead, you can choose between first and second-class compartments, with first class being more comfortable, with greater legroom, and including services such as complimentary drinks and newspapers, as well as power sockets for your gadgets.

15 days within a period of one month.. What does that mean?

With some kinds of Interrail Pass, you are entitled to a certain number of travel days within the validity period, for example 5 days within a 15-day period, or 15 days within a one-month period – you can make as many trips as you want per day.

In the case of night buses, the journey is counted on the day you arrive – meaning you can travel further after arriving without using an extra day. However, if you opt for the 22 Days Pass or the 30 Days Pass, you can travel as much as you like throughout your validity period.

Who Can Buy An Interrail Pass?

Only citizens of EU member nations, or those who can prove residence in these countries, are entitled to buy an Interrail Pass. This is also extended to some other countries including Iceland, Turkey, Russia, Algeria, Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Latvia, Cyprus, Morocco, Tunisia, and Albania.

You only need to prove that your residence status is legal when you buy the pass (for example, by showing a passport or residence card) – whichever form of documentation you use, it should not expire before the validity period of your Interrail Pass ends. If you are not a European citizen or resident, don’t worry – you can buy an Eurail Pass instead.

Non-EU Resident? You need the Eurail Pass! It offers many of the same awesome benefits as the Interrail Pass, but is available to people who don’t come from or live in Europe. Get yours here:

Families can buy passes that allow children to travel for free. To qualify, the child should be no more than 11 years old on the day their Interrail Pass becomes valid. Up to two children per adult (over 18) can travel for free, but if you intend to bring more children than that, youth passes should be purchased for each additional child.

Interrail Passes Explained Simply

You must be below the age limit on the day your Interrail Pass becomes valid, or you will need to pay the regular price. Up to two children per adult (over 18) can travel for free, but if you intend to bring more children than that, youth passes should be purchased for each additional child.

There are two Interrail Pass types – the Global Pass and the One Country pass. The Interrail Global Pass allows you to travel in 30 European countries, while the One Country pass is only valid in the country of your choice.

You can upgrade the One Country pass to a Premium Pass, which gives you the privilege of booking your train reservations in advance, for free. You can also combine two One Country passes that will give you unlimited privileges in two countries.

In addition, your options of Interrail Pass Europe vary in terms of flexibility. Compare the different Interrail Passes above and you will see that some allow for unlimited travel, whereas some will enable you to travel only on a certain number of days. You designate your chosen travel days in your travel diary and are allowed unlimited travel during those days.

What are the Benefits of the Interrail Global Pass?

The Interrail Global Pass is the ideal choice if you are planning to tour around multiple countries across the continent, since you have the privilege of using it with the train services of 30 different countries. Here are 4 fantastic reasons for you to go Interrailing:

Flexibility

You have the flexibility of creating your own travel itinerary since you have the freedom to use the train services of the country you are visiting on a near-unlimited basis. And you can add even more flexibility by opting for a continuous pass, which lets you use it for its entire validity.

Convenience

It makes train travel more convenient since you no longer need to buy individual tickets whenever you need to take the train to a new destination; you simply show your Interrail Pass and jump on board. And there are discounts and occasional sales that make the price of an Interrail pass even more affordable – see above for these!

Affordability

You can also save money on your trips by using an Interrail pass, depending on your itinerary. If you have a fixed itinerary and you can book months in advance, you may find you can save more by buying single destination tickets directly from the national operator. But this comes with its own risks and none of the flexibility that makes Interrailing so exciting.

Versatility

You can also enjoy discounted fares on Eurostar routes between London and Paris, Calais, Brussels, or Lille, although seats reserved for Interrail Pass holders are limited. Participating ferry operators will also give discounts on fares and even buy a joint train and ferry ticket for a single low price.

You can also use your Interrail Pass on local trains within your destination. You can even use them on many regional routes if you are feeling adventurous, since these usually go to smaller destinations that are off the beaten path.

Don’t make any more excuses not to take the trip of a lifetime!

Other Types of Interrail Pass – Europe Awaits!

One of the major advantages of buying an Interrail Pass rather than point-to-point single journey tickets is the wide range of choices you have. You can choose the type of Interrail Pass that best suits your needs and enjoy the convenience of not having to line up at the ticket office every time you need to take the train to a new destination.

You can also choose the validity term that fits the length of your trip across Europe, so you won’t have to spend extra money for days that you will not use. Scroll up to compare the six different tickets available to you – each one has a different combination of validity length and number of travel days.

Interrail Pass Europe – 1 month ticket

As you can see above, there are four types of 1-month Interrail Global Pass. One allows you to travel every day while it is valid, and the other three allow you to travel on 7, 10 or 15 days during its validity. There are also One Country passes – these tend to vary depending on the country you are visiting. Head over to our Interrail Destination Guides for more information.

An Interrail Pass Europe – 1 month ticket is the best choice if you are planning to take an extended tour of Europe. With so much to see and do in the continent, thirty days is barely enough to scratch the surface; buying a 1-month ticket makes perfect sense in this case.

With the number of options available to you, you can choose the one that suits your travel plans. If you are planning to take in as many sights as possible in a month, you can buy a continuous Interrial Pass that provides you with unlimited train travel throughout the validity period of the pass.

On the other hand, if you are planning to stay longer in particular places, then you can buy a one of the passes that only gives you the number of travel days you need. For instance, if you buy a 1-month Interrail Pass with 15 travel days, you can stay two days in one place and then use your travel day to get to your next destination.

Interrail Pass Europe – 2-weeks ticket

If you have limited time to take for your trip, then you’re in luck – there is also a 2-week Interrail Pass that is perfect for people who can’t be away for too long due to constraints such as work and family.

There are two types of Interrail Global Pass that are valid for fifteen days:

One which allows you to travel every day – perfect for a whistle-stop tour where you see as much as possible. If you want to keep your options open, then you’ll be much better off with the continuous pass since it allows you to take as many trains as you please within the validity period.

One that allows you to travel on 5 different days – for a more leisurely experience, spend a few days in each place you visit. If you have a fixed itinerary, then a 15-day Interrail Pass with 5 travel days may be the best choice, since you can schedule your trips to maximize your travel days. You can even mix-and-match your tickets, buying cheap point-to-point tickets for shorter single trips rather than having to spend one of the travel days on your Interrail Pass.

Interrail Pass vs. Eurail Pass: Which One Do I Need?

The Interrail Pass is limited only to European citizens and those who can prove residency in Europe. You no longer need to have lived for at least six months in a participating country to be able to buy a pass; you simply need to be a legal resident at the time you bought the pass. However, if your residency will expire before the end of the Interrail Pass validity period, then you cannot buy one.

Types of Eurail Pass

There are three types of Eurail passes. The Global pass allows you to use the train services of five or more countries and is validity period ranges between 5 days and 3 months.

The Select pass lets you use the train services of two, three or four bordering countries (i.e. Switzerland-Italy-Germany-France) and has a validity of 5 to 10 days.

The One Country Pass provides you with unlimited train service privileges in a participating country of your choice; you can choose from 28 participating countries.

Flexibility

Like with the Interrail Pass, you can also choose to have continuous or flexible validity. A continuous validity pass lets you travel during the entire period it is valid. Flexible validity, on the other hand, gives you a certain number of travel days during which you can avail of unlimited train services.

Discounts

In addition, sizeable youth discounts are available to those aged 27 and below – even up to 35% less than the price of a standard adult pass. Eurail does not provide senior discounts for individual ticket purchases, but senior buyers can make us of ‘Saver fares’ where each member of a group of up to five people enjoys a discount of up to 15% on normal adult rates.

Families

Family groups can make use of a discount that allows children under the age of 12 to travel for free on their first travel day. You can get your free child passes when you buy at least one adult pass and click on the Family tab when you check out. However, only a maximum of two children per adult can travel for free; additional children will need their own youth pass.

Additional Benefits

In addition to unlimited train travel, Eurail passes also provide additional travel benefits, including discounted and free travel on many ferry routes and free travel on Swiss trains, including the scenic Golden Pass and Glacier Express routes (you only need to pay the reservation fee). To be sure that you can avail of the benefit, you may need to book in advance or show your Eurail pass on the day that you are booking.

Each country also has its own specific set of benefits. In Spain, for instance, you can enjoy discounts on ferry routes and fares on certain routes of Grimaldi Lines, free travel on any SNCF and Renfe bus routes, and a 50% discount on the entrance fees of the Spanish Railway Museum in Barcelona and Madrid. However, there are terms and conditions associated with these benefits, so make sure you visit the Interrail page that covers these so you can be assured that you will be able to avail of them.

Interrail Pass prices – how much does an Interrail Pass cost?

There are a number of different prices for an Interrail Pass, since there are a variety of factors that influence their cost. Head up to our Interrail Pass comparison above for a more visual representation of the different options, which include:

Age – Adults pay the highest prices, while youth and senior buyers are entitled to discounts which make the Interrail Pass more affordable for them.

Flexibility – The less expensive Interrail Passes are the ones which provide only a limited number of travel days, while the more high-end Passes allow you unlimited travel throughout their validity period.

Validity period – The length of time in which you have to complete your trip. This can range from 15 days to one month.

Travel class – Interrail Passes for 1st class are naturally more expensive than those for 2nd class since they are more comfortable and have more facilities.

Global Pass vs. One Country Pass – The Interrail Global Pass costs more since it can be used in any participating country, while the One Country Pass can only be used in the country you choose. Prices for One Country Passes vary, depending on the country that is covered.

The most pricey Interrail Pass is the 1st Class adult pass allowing unlimited travel within 30 days. The least expensive one is the 2nd Class youth pass allowing 5 days of travel within a 15 day period.

Interrail Pass Review

Alan Edwards, 22:

“After looking through all the passes available and doing my homework, I decided on a one month Interrail Global Pass. I was travelling from Spain to Romania and I figured out that I would save more money by investing in an Interrail Pass.

My decision was validated when I took a trip from Seville to Barcelona. Although I had to pay a 10 Euro reservation fee, I did not have to pay the fare itself since I just showed my Pass. The fare already made up one-third of the cost of the Pass and I still had 29 days left to use.

I would highly recommend the Interrail Global Pass for those who are planning to visit a lot of countries and don’t want to plan in advance. However, it is still worth comparing prices and making the choice based on how you plan to travel.”

Can I Leave an Interrail Global Pass Review?

Yes! We encourage everyone who has travelled using an Interrail Pass to share his or her experiences with us.

Please feel free to tell us your story in the comments section below, or get in touch via email!

Emily Scott, 27:

“I was about to hit my 27th birthday so I decided to take the plunge and buy an Interrail Global pass so I could see the rest of Europe. I also downloaded the Rail Planner app for my phone so I could avoid trains that required a reservation fee.

During my trip, I ultimately visited 11 countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain and Estonia. I used the pass 20 times and spent just 85 euros in reservation fees. By using the pass, I spent around 200 Euro less overall than if I had bought single tickets.

Was it worth it? Although 200 Euro does not seem like that much, you also need to factor in the convenience of not having to line up for tickets every time I had to use the train. In addition, I also made a few mistakes by using the Pass for trains that went for just short distances; if I had planned better and used the Pass for longer trips I would have saved more.

So yes it was worth it, particularly if you factor in all the other benefits and discounts you can get with an Interrail pass. Many people are not aware of these bonuses, since they are only focused on using it for train trips. If you do a little research, you can actually discover some great little spots that can greatly enhance your stay in a particular city!”

Is an Interrail Pass worth it?

Obviously, before you invest in an Interrail Pass that costs hundreds of Euros, you should take the time to compare them, so you can find the option that gives you the best value for your money. Here are some relevant questions that could help you make your decision.

How far in advance can you plan your trip?

If you are 100% sure that you are leaving in a month or so, you can save more money by booking your trips in advance and availing of advance-purchase discounts. However, you will not be able to ask for a refund if you cannot use the ticket, and you will miss out on all of the flexibility that the Interrail Pass has to offer.

One of the best things about travelling is meeting people en route and spontaneously changing plans to follow the current!

How long are the trips you are planning to make?

In addition, sizeable youth discounts are available to those aged 27 and below – even up to 35% less than the price of a standard adult pass. Eurail does not provide senior discounts for individual ticket purchases, but senior buyers can make us of ‘Saver fares’ where each member of a group of up to five people enjoys a discount of up to 15% on normal adult rates.

Are you entitled to a discount?

If you qualify as a youth or a senior, then you are always eligible for some kind of discount. In addition, if you are travelling as a family, children up to age 11 travel for free (max 2 children per adult over 18), so that is definitely worth bearing in mind.

Feeling overwhelmed by the planning?

We’ve got you covered! Just head on over interrailplanner.com, a free online tool which makes planning your trip super easy.
