Copenhagen

Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital, a city overflowing with rich cultural sites as well as recreational attractions. Visit Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest amusement park, and the inspiration behind Disney’s theme parks. It offers a variety of attractions, from roller coasters to puppet plays to concerts, and the gardens transform into a Christmas wonderland during winter.

Dyrehavsbakken, or Bakken for short, is the world’s oldest amusement park, found just north of Copenhagen, in the woodlands, so you can enjoy picnics and horse carriage rides surrounded by nature in between your roller coaster and drop tower rides.

Amalienborg & Nyhavn

Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish Royal Family, is located in the Frederiksstaden quarter in Copenhagen.

It is made up of four identical palaces forming an octagon, which shows off the Danes’ unique architectural design. Check out the Soldiers of the Royal Guard in their bearskins while you’re there.

Nyhavn is a charming harbor found behind the Amalienborg Palace that is often featured in most postcards of Denmark because of its picturesque row of colorful houses and tall ships along the quayside. Stroll along the area and grab a bite to eat at the restaurants and cafés.

Helsingør

Venture outside of Copenhagen and visit Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, the closest city to Sweden. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Explore the castle and its many attractions, and don’t miss the grand Shakespeare theater festivals in August. Helsingør also has numerous cultural attractions, such as museums for art, architecture, and even wine; you can also spend your summer holiday by the beaches.

Odense

You can stop by Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense, the master storyteller’s birthplace. The museum displays all things Andersen, such as artifacts and artworks. Known as the heart of Denmark, Odense is also host to a number of music and film festivals throughout the year.

Another famous Danish castle is Egeskov Castle, in Kvarnstrup, near Odense, which looks straight out of a fairy tale with its majestic spires, a knight’s hall, and the best preserved moat in Europe. It boasts of attractions such as its vintage car museum, a dollhouse, a play forest, a treetop walk, Segway tours, and other historical exhibits.

Billund Legoland

Denmark is the home of the Lego, so it is a must to visit the original Legoland theme park located in Billund, in Jutland, right next to the original Lego factory and the Billund airport.

Aarhus

Recommended Interrail Denmark Route

The best place to start off your tour of Denmark is Copenhagen, especially if you arrive in the country at the Copenhagen airport. Spend a few days to soak in all that Copenhagen has to offer, then head up to Helsingør to see Hamlet’s Castle – it’s only a quick, 45-minute train ride away with the regional express train.

Maximize your day trip up north by visting nearby attractions such as the Louisana Modern Art Musuem, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, and Roskilde.
