5 Great Reasons to Interrail in the Czech Republic

Although not on the ‘most famous destinations’ list, the Czech Republic sure is a European gem. Here are some reasons why you should get your Eurail or Interail Czech Republic Pass:

Castles

The Czech Republic has one of the largest density of castles, almost 2,000 of them. They are literally almost everywhere you look. You would probably just spend your trip just hopping from one castle to another, because each of them has something distinctive. One of the most famous one is the Prague Castle dating from the 9th century. You are more than welcome to spend your day discovering the palaces, the courtyards, museums and gardens located there. For the neo-Gothic architecture lovers, the Hluboká Castle is a must see.

Beer

The Czech Republic’s long history of beer brewing will not disappoint you – they have been doing this for more than a thousand years and still counting. The Czechs even have a 17-day Beer Festival every year so gather up beer lovers! This is the time to take beer tasting to a whole new level. You will not be alone in this adventure, as the Czechs won the 1st place at beer consumption and they very much love to talk about their local products.

Wine

The Czechs are also known for their Moravian wine. In case you haven’t hear about the vineyards there, now is the time. You will find there impressive castles, wine cellars for tastings and beautiful scenery. There are at least four towns that are worth visiting for their wine tasting experiences – Mikulov, Slovácko, Velké Pavlovice and Znojmo.

Spas

Welcome to the land of relaxation and mud baths. The Czech Republic is famous for the spas, especially the beer spas, where massages, baths and much more are based on products made from beer. We did mention that the country is proud of their beer tradition, right?

If you’re looking for the most famous one, you have to pay Karlovy Vary a visit, which is a spa town located in western Bohemia. The 19th-century spa structures are also a treat.

National Parks And Caves

The country offers a vast untouched landscape, making it a haven for those of you who wish to get away from the loud and distracting cities. The ‘Šumava National Park’ is now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Forest and is a great destination for outdoor activities lovers – you can go hiking or cycling during summer and if you happen to be there during winter, you can give cross-country skiing a go. For something maybe more memorable, there is the Hranice Abbys, which is actually the second deepest underwater cave in the world.

What to bring on my Interrail Czech Republic trip?

The official Interrail website lists the following as necessary items to bring with you on your trip:

  • First Aid kit
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Spare credit card
  • Padlock
  • Torch
  • Driving licence
  • Money belt
  • Universal adaptor
  • Alarm clock
  • Phrase book
  • Small speakers
  • Waterproof jacket / poncho
  • Backpack rain cover
  • Plasters
  • Playing cards
  • Bottle opener
  • Hiking boots
  • Swimming goggles
  • Wet wipes
  • Resealable bags

And of course, you will need a backpack to carry everything – lucky for you, we’ve taken the time to review the best Interrail backpack options out there.

Is it safe?

The Czech Republic is generally safe – however, pickpocketing, petty thefts, bag snatching and ATM scams are possible. This is particularly true in Prague as this is Czech Republic’s main tourist destination.

Regardless, it is always important to take care – try to avoid walking streets alone at night, and keep your valuables somewhere safe. If there’s no safe place at your hotel or hostel, keep them with you!

If you are concerned about something that could go wrong on your trip, we recommend taking a look at World Nomads Travel Insurance – it’s designed especially for travellers rather than typical holidaymakers.
