5 Great Reasons to Interrail in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is known for the mix of its natural and cosmopolitan beauty. Rail travel is one of the best ways to enjoy this country’s sceneries to the fullest. Explore the country’s full magnificence with ease by becoming an Interrail Bulgaria Pass holder.

Beaches

The Bulgarian coastline is well known for its golden beaches. The sunny and warm summers make for the perfect getaway in the company of a fresh juice or cocktail while sunbathing. The Black Sea is quite salty and very hospitable, so it will be easy to swim in. Plus, there are no dangerous animals in the Black Sea so just bathe away as much as you like! Some of the most famous beaches are Sozopol, Lozenets and Nessebar, of course. The latter is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Food & Drink

Given the country’s rich history and varied influences, Bulgaria is a great place to extend your food experiences. The Bulgarian cuisine is a mix of slavic, greek and oriental influences so be prepared to stare into the menu for some long moments before deciding what to order. The drinks will be there to assist in getting the full experience as the Bulgarians have a long history of grape growing. In fact, they have been producing wine since the times of the Thracians.

History

The Bulgarian vast history can be dated back to the 7th century BC and many of the ancient civilizations have left their mark in stone and culture. Thracians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Ottomans and Russians have all influences the architecture, culture, cuisine and many more. In fact, Bulgaria has one of the richest folk heritages in the world. The theater build in the 2nd century A.D. at Plovdiv is still in use and you can even visit the UNESCO protected Thracian burial tomb, built around the year 300 B.C.

Wellness

When in need of a treat and of a way to relax and charge your batteries, the Bulgarian spas sure are a great option. The Roman influence can still be felt in the many resorts that offer spa, jacuzzi and relaxation massages. There’s even a traditional way of enjoying the massages at the spa. The Bulgarians are known for their honey massages that will melt you in pleasure and relaxation.

Affordable

Bulgaria is still terribly underrated and overlooked by many tourists which only means that it will not get very crowded. You will find that delicious food, tasty drinks and great places to stay are quite cheap compared to the other European countries. Bulgaria still uses its currency – leva – and you will see that the prices are very low, while the quality of services and products is really high. This means that your Interrail or Eurail Bulgaria journey will not leave you penniless and you will sure get back home with a full pack of memorable moments.

Interrail / Eurail Bulgaria – what to do, where to go?

Here are some of our favourite ‘must-go’ places that you can plan into your Interrail Bulgaria trip. Everyone has different tastes, so pick and choose the ones that sound cool to you!

Sofia

The capital city of Bulgaria is scattered with really well-preserved Roman structures. The oldest monument in the city is St. George Church Rotunda, which dates back to the beginning of the 4th century A.D. There is also St Sofia Church, dating back to the 6th century A.D. You will find there an almost intact Roman necropolis and the remains of over 50 tombs and artefacts, built on different underground levels. This is a history lover’s paradise, as the byzantine and roman structures are in really great condition and you can visit most of them.

Varna

Although mostly overlooked by tourists, Varna is a wonderful destination not just for its golden beach, but also for the Sea Garden. The public park will amaze with the diversity of flowers, street art, sculptures and beautiful landscape. Once you’re done walking around, every restaurant is ready to serve you with fresh seafood at really affordable prices. Another fun thing to do in Varna while you’re on your Eurail or Interrail Bulgaria journey is to go dolphin spotting while sailing in a regatta. Nature lovers can also go and check out the Stone Forest, where you will find 13 square kilometres of stone columns carved by tiny organisms. It sure is a memorable sight.

Balchik

This is not your usual lively city. But it sure is a haven and a breath of fresh air. Located by the Black Sea, Balchik’s main attraction is the palace, close to the seafront promenade. The palace was built by and for King Ferdinand’s wife, Queen Mary between 1925 and 1929. The place is also known as ‘The Queen’s Nest’ and it is easy to see why. While the palace itself is quite small, the gardens surrounding it and the small houses for the guests and the workers will make you feel like you are walking in a small medieval village, where you know everyone. The famous garden was tended by the Queen herself and it still wears the perfume of those quiet times.

Plovdiv

Plovidiv has been designated as the European Capital of Culture for 2019 so it sure should be in your itinerary. The mixture of cultures that have lived in the area have left their mark so you will see Thracian, Roman and Ottoman structures still in great condition. As it has always been known as the rich people’s city, there is plenty of classic architecture and well known restaurants and bars all around. There are plenty of artistic cafés as well. You can very well say it feels like a western city, but with a more laidback attitude.

Nessebar

Yet another Black Sea coast city, Nessebar brings the ancient Roman fragrance closer with standing fortress walls and towers. Walk along the cobbled streets and admire the old houses which lead you to the UNESCO protected Old Town. The beaches are all you have been waiting for from your trip to Bulgaria. The Black Sea is a great environment to test your swimming skills, as its salt will help you stay afloat. There are many water activities as well, such as kitesurfing, scuba diving or surfing. If you just cannot get enough of water, then you can hit the adventurous slides of Aquapark Nessebar.

Whichever Interrail or Eurail Bulgaria guide you read, there will always be unanswered questions. If you feel that there is anything missing from this guide or the FAQ below, let us know in the comments or send an email!

What to bring on my Interrail Bulgaria trip?

The official Interrail website lists the following as necessary items to bring with you on your trip:

  • First Aid kit
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Spare credit card
  • Padlock
  • Torch
  • Driving licence
  • Money belt
  • Universal adaptor
  • Alarm clock
  • Phrase book
  • Small speakers
  • Waterproof jacket / poncho
  • Backpack rain cover
  • Plasters
  • Playing cards
  • Bottle opener
  • Hiking boots
  • Swimming goggles
  • Wet wipes
  • Resealable bags

And of course, you will need a backpack to carry everything – lucky for you, we’ve taken the time to review the best Interrail backpack options out there.

Is it safe?

As a traveler in Bulgaria, your biggest safety issue is likely going to be pickpockets. This is incredibly common, especially in large cities like Sofia.

Aside from that, it is always important to take care – try to avoid walking streets alone at night, and keep your valuables somewhere safe. If there’s no safe place at your hotel or hostel, keep them with you!

If you are concerned about something that could go wrong on your trip, we recommend taking a look at World Nomads Travel Insurance – it’s designed especially for travellers rather than typical holidaymakers.
