5 Great Reasons to Interrail in the Slovenia

Slovenia is filled with dazzling natural wonders and the people will make you feel at home for sure. Here are just a few reasons why you should start your Interrail or Eurail journey in Slovenia.

Underground wonders

Slovenia does have marvellous scenery on the surface and even in the underground, as the Karst region is known for the impressive caves and caverns.

The Postojna Cave will amaze you with the multitude of stalagmites, stalactites and peculiar pillars. You can even encounter pink cave salamanders and go on an underground guided adventure.

For The Lord of the Rings fans, there is a cave listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Škocjan Caves will offer you the opportunity to stare into the abyss of a 150m-deep canyon carved in the underground by the river.

Watersports

Slovenia has abunding natural water resources. Not only is this good for the economy of the country, but it offers travellers some memorable adventures as well.

You can relax at a thermal spa or go swimming. Soča Valley is a famous spot for water sports enthusiasts and you can go on great adventures such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, riverboarding or kayaking.

You can even practice stand-up boarding down the river. Don’t forget to breath in the fresh air and have a look at the wonderful landscape!

Wines

The mild climate in Slovenia makes for the perfect place for wine-making. The Vipaya Valley is a very-much acclaimed location due to its vineyards and professional production of wine.

Your Interrail or Eurail Slovenia journey will take you to the land of tasty wines, all while you enjoy the view of the valley. You can even visit most of the vineyards and taste the wine from the locals.

There are three main wine-growing regions in Slovenia, each with a different soil and method, so there are plenty of varieties to choose from!

Street art

The end of the communist period marked a revolution in culture and freedom of speech. The Slovenians took this very seriously and over the past 25 years, activists and free-spirited people have expressed their feelings through street-art.

Beware, we do mean street-art and not just scrapping a name on a wall.

The Metelkova district used to be an army barracks but now represents a beatufiul and colorful canvas for street-art artists. This is also the place for some lively nightlife.

Nature landscapes

Slovenia is a wonderful option to visit unspoilt scenery and ravish in the natural wonders. Lake Bled is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps and is a really popular attraction in Slovenia.

Another beautiful lake is Zelenci, with deep, green-coloured water. A great hiking experience is on Mount Mangart, located in the Julian Alps as well.

Its peak is the fourth-highest in the country and will offer you some breath-taking views from above. Put your adventure cap on and enjoy the gorgeus lanscapes and natural wonders of Slovenia!

Interrail / Eurail Slovenia – what to do, where to go?

Here are some of our favourite ‘must-go’ places that you can plan into your Interrail Slovenia trip. Everyone has different tastes, so pick and choose the ones that sound cool to you!

Ljubljana

Ljubljana

The capital city of Slovenia is far from the madness of a metropolis. The friendly small-town vibe is all around and you will feel welcomed everywhere you go. The people’s hospitality is transferred to the environment as well, as Ljubljana was the European Green Capital in 2016.

The large green spaces are fantastic and you can go sightseeing by bike or ride the paddle-board down the river.

The history of the city is impressive as well, as it dates back to 2000 B.C. and you can still see well-preserved structures from the Roman Empire.

The food is great as well, as they have something for anyone, including restaurants specialized in vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Piran

The gorgeous city of Piran is located on the Slovenian coast, inviting you to admire the beauty of the Adriatic Sea.

The Gothic architecture will please your eyes and invite you to take a walk around the town and enjoy the well-preserved structures.

You can visit the birthplace of Giuseppe Tartini, a famous composer and violinist and take a tour in his house, as it is now turned into a cultural event venue.

The 15th century Gothic Venetian House is one of the main attractions so make sure you don’t miss visiting it or hearing about the legends built around it.

Maribor

Maribor was the Eurpean Capital of Culture back in 2012 and you can still see that the people are taking really good care of their town.

There are many historic sights you can visit, such as the Maribor Castle or the Synagogue in the Židovski trg Square.

There are also plenty of museums, galleries and the theatre is marvelous as well. If you are not sure what to visit or you wish to learn more about Maribor, you can always go on a guided tour.

For the more adventurous of you, there are many activities such as cycling, hiking or rafting.

Bled

Bled

Located at the foothills of Julius Alps, Bled is a gorgeous small town built around the famous Lake Bled.

This is a wonderful opportunity to ride a boat on the lake, all the way to the island situated in the center.

It might be a small island, but the beautiful church and the view you get from there is worth your ride.

This is a true haven for those of you wishing to get away from the madding crown and spend some quality time with yourself or those dear to you.

Kranjska Gora

This is the to-go place for winter sports enthusiasts. Located in the Northwest part of the country, Kranjska Gora is the most notorious winter resort in Slovenia, with 18 ski slopes.

There is also place for other winter sport activities, such as snowboarding. If you’re starting your Eurail or Interrail Slovenia journey during any other season, this is still a wonderful place to visit, as there are many hiking trails and you can even rent mountain bikes.

Or you can just enjoy some time in the middle of nature.

Is it safe?

Holland is one of the safest and most welcoming countries in Europe. The people are friendly and it has a very low crime rate.

Regardless, it is always important to take care – try to avoid walking streets alone at night, and keep your valuables somewhere safe. If there’s no safe place at your hotel or hostel, keep them with you!

If you are concerned about something that could go wrong on your trip, we recommend taking a look at World Nomads Travel Insurance – it’s designed especially for travellers rather than typical holidaymakers.
