5 Great Reasons to Interrail Romania

Landscape

Hikers, get your gear on! Nature lovers, prepare to be amazed! Romania has some of the most rewarding sceneries in Europe, with many untouched forests. A great way to properly admire Romania’s natural and true beauty is visiting the Retezat massif, in the Retezat National Park. The Apuseni National Park is another good place, with many guided tracks to follow. The rich biodiversity will sure take your breath away and help you disconnect from the madness of daily life.

Food

There is one thing you need to know about the lifestyle here – Romanians sure do love to eat and cook. So loosen your belt and immerse yourself in the delicious Romanian cuisine.

The most frequent meat dish you will encounter is pork, while the side dish is usually polenta (mămăligă). The latter is basically corn-meal mush. Another traditional meal is ‘sarmale’, which are made of cabbage rolls stuffed with spiced pork, rice and carrots. Though not fancy, the Romanian cuisine is usually described as ‘just like grandma’s’

Hopsitality

Romanians are very fond of their traditions and are eager to tell you stories about the country and its beauties. Their hospitality can mostly be noticed in the rural areas, where each old woman will treat you as her nephew or niece and offer you food and accommodation.

You will also notice a rich diversity of ethnicities – there are many minorities living, working and contributing to the Romanian society. You will see gypsies, Turkish people, Tatars, Hungarians, a mixture of Russians, Ukrainians, Serbs, Slovaks and Bulgarians.

Rural Villages

As there are many untouched forests and national parks, it is no wonder that the rural villages are a beauty themselves too. Your Eurail or Interrail Romania Pass will allow you to travel to the hidden gems of Romania, such as Barsana in Maramures, Pestera and Magura in the Brasov county or the Transylvanian village of Viscri, which is also one of Prince Charles’ favourite destination in Romania. Time really does stand still in these places.

Interrail / Eurail Romania – what to do, where to go?

Whilst we are strong advocates of the spontaneous approach when it comes to your Eurail or Interrail Roamania route planning, thinking ahead a little never hurt anyone!

To that end, here is our top 5 list of places to see and things to do on your Interrail or Eurail Romania trip – feel free to use them, or add your own in the comments!

Bucharest

Bucharest

The capital of Romania was once called ‘The Paris of the East’, due to the high life level during the interwar period and also due to the Art Nouveau buildings and French-designed grand municipal structures.

The sight is now scattered with communist buildings, but you can still find lots of beautiful pieces of architecture to please your eyes with. In case you are a book lover, then you must visit the Carturesti Carusel Bookshop – it is build inside a 19th century old building.

Also, the ‘Caru’ cu Bere’ is the best place to enjoy traditional food and great beer. You will find the restaurant inside the Old Town’s most famous beer hall.

Sighisoara

Dating back from the 1100’s, Sighisoara is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. No wonder about that – there are colourful buildings, pedestrian streets and the holiday mood is on all year round.

The Old Town is pretty small, so you can just drop by one day and continue your journey the next. But don’t worry – there are plenty to see even in just one day and the sight will stay with you for a long time.

We were bound to get to this subject as well – yes, this is the birthplace of Vlad III, also known as…. Vlad Dracula!

Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is included in the World’s Heritage list and it truly is a delight to all the wildlife lovers, fishers and birdwatchers. The people are incredibly welcoming and finding an accommodation will not be hard.

The food is also savoury and we promise that you will taste fish dishes that you have not even heard of before.

You can go boat riding all day long or just spend your time breathing in fresh air, listening to the wind and the birds and get a tan. Life seems easier to live in this place, you’ll see.

Constanta

The far South-East city of Constanta will offer you a view of the Black Sea – soft waves, gulls and warm temperatures in the summer time. In case you travel to Romania during winter, you can still give it a go – sometimes the sea drops to freezing temperatures and you can even walk on it!

Constanta also offers a diverse culture – the Turkish cuisine inspires very many dishes in this area and their influence can also be seen in the architecture.

You might also notice that the people in this part of the country have a different style of speaking – they speak faster and louder.

Sapanta

Could you imagine a place that usually makes people sad have a merry and jolly atmosphere? This is what happens at Sapanta, in Maramures.

The ‘Merry Cemetery’ is a visual delight, with colourful wooden headstones and short poems about the life of the departed. The place seems cheerful even on a rainy day – it sure does change one’s perspective over death.

One famous epitaph reads: Underneath this heavy cross / Lies my mother-in-law poor / Try not to wake her up (…) / For if she comes back home / She’ll bite my head off.

The Merry Cemetery is now a museum, so you are more than welcome to visit it.
