5 Great Reasons to Interrail in Italy

Interrail in Italy and you will experience so much. There is simply not enough space on the page to tell you everything about it – which is why it is much better to simply go and see it for yourself! These are our top 5 reasons to Interrail or Eurail in Italy – remember that this is only our opinion; if you disagree or have more to add – let us hear about it in the comments section!

Food

Italian food is simply fantastic. This is the country that gave the world Pasta, Pizza and brilliant breads with names as exotic as their taste – think ciabatta, foccacia, bruschetta, and many more. With many dishes centered around their incredibly rich pomodoro (tomato) based sauces, you can expect to eat very well when you Interrail in Italy.

Architecture

Italy is home to some of the most famous landmarks in the world. Number one on the list for almost all Interrail Italy travellers, is a visit to the jaw-dropping Roman Colosseum – a beautifully preserved and stark reminder of the power once held in Ancient Rome by Caesar, Nero, and the other emperors of the day. Add to that the classic photo opportunity provided by the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the numerous religious hotspots such as the Sistine Chapel with the ceiling painted by Michaelangelo himself, and you have a country bursting with culture and history to explore.

Wine

In terms of sheer volume, Italy is the biggest producer of wine in the world. Not only that, but the country ranks at number 5 when it comes to wine consumption. So it is safe to say that you will have plenty of wine to choose from while you are taking the Eurail in Italy! There are also regular vineyard trips, which often includes wine tasting, if you are feeling particularly indulgent.

Scenery

How many countries can give you all of this:

Fashion

Italy is home to some of the very biggest names and brands in fashion – Prada, Gucci, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace all began their fashion careers in Italy, and now their clothes and accessories adorn catwalks the world over. The peak of the fashionista calendar in Italy is of course, the annual fashion week in Milan, which attracts thousands of fashion industry giants every year.

Football

At arguably the opposite side of the spectrum to the fashionistas (unless you happen to be Posh and Becks), you have Italian football. Italy contains some of the most passionate football fans that ever walked the Earth, and Italian football boasts some of the most fearsome rivalries in the world. If you Interrail or Eurail Italy at the right time, you might be lucky enough to catch the Milan derby (AC Milan vs Internazionale) or the Rome derby (Roma vs Lazio)!

What to bring on my Interrail Italy trip?

The official Interrail website lists the following as necessary items to bring with you on your trip:

  • First Aid kit
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Spare credit card
  • Padlock
  • Torch
  • Driving licence
  • Money belt
  • Universal adaptor
  • Alarm clock
  • Phrase book
  • Small speakers
  • Waterproof jacket / poncho
  • Backpack rain cover
  • Plasters
  • Playing cards
  • Bottle opener
  • Hiking boots
  • Swimming goggles
  • Wet wipes
  • Resealable bags

Naturally, you will need a backpack to carry all of this stuff – check out our review of the best Interrail backpack options out there.

Is it safe?

Italy is overall a safe place to visit for tourists. Millions of people from the UK and US travel to Italy every year, and many millions more do so from Italy’s neighbouring European countries. The main things to watch out for are earthquake and volcano warnings, which will be very easy to spot.

Occasionally there are political demonstrations with minimal warning – general advice is to simply avoid the area until it dies down. Regardless, we advise that you maintain your vigilance at all times while travelling, wherever you are.

That means sticking with your travelling partner if you have one, not taking rides from strangers at the airport, and avoiding situations which place you in a vulnerable position. More detailed advice can be found in our Interrail safety guide.
