5 great reasons to Eurail or Interrail in France

France has got so much going for it, we could be here all day describing it to you; it is far better to go and see it all for yourself! Here are our top 5 reasons to Interrail France – remember that this is just us talking; if you disagree or have more to add we would love to hear about it in the comments section!

Food

French are renowned worldwide as having fantastic taste in food, and it’s no accident. It’s almost unbelievable that in one day you can eat delicious breakfast pastries like croissants, pain au chocolat, tuck into delicious French baguettes with soup for lunch, have a truly flavorful coq au vin for dinner, and finish your evening with some outrageously tasty French cheese and biscuits paired with red wine. Is your mouth watering yet?

Architecture

In Paris alone, there are so many spectacular buildings and landmarks for you to see; l’Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame..

It is often easy to forget that these examples of truly stunning architecture are all over the country! If you’re leaving the beaten track, you could try visiting some of the beautiful French chateaux, such as Chateau de Chambord near Tours – which is also a very interesting museum.

Wine

It wouldn’t be a trip to France without trying some of the local wineries and visiting the vineyards! Treat yourself to a bottle of some of Europe’s finest red, pink and white delicacies. And that’s not to mention the fizzy stuff – get some top-notch French champagne straight from the source while you’re on your trip. You can even send some back to remind the people at home you are thinking of them!

Trains

Finally, we come to the trains themselves – what kind of Interrail France page would this be without a mention for them? France boasts an extremely well-developed, punctual and regular train service to residents and tourists alike. Paris also has a highly extensive underground train network to match the London Underground or New York Subway.

And of course, there is the TGV – a high speed train line racing down the center of France at up to 200mph, enabling you to get from Paris to Tours in under 90 minutes!

Interrail France – what to do, where to go?

The best piece of travel advice is often the one you hear the most; go where the mood takes you. One of the best parts of travelling alone or even with a friend is meeting new people along the way who give you great ideas on what is good to see and do at that particular time.

However, if you have your heart set on planning everything out in advance for your Interrail or Eurail France trip, we’ve got some great places to share with you.

Paris

Obviously. Nothing groundbreaking here, but unless you are the most die-hard of hipster travellers you will struggle to find reasons not to visit France’s magnifique capital city. The buildings, the food, the shopping, the culture, the landmarks, the history and of course the Parisians themselves all combine to make it a truly unforgettable stop on your Interrail journey – if of course, you give it the opportunity.

Montpellier

Way down in the South of France where the sun shines bright and time seems to almost stand still at times, is the easygoing student city of Montpellier.

The place is like the essence of Interrailing captured within one place; you can get grab some bracing French coffee from the cafés, eat cheap and delicious food from the local student hangouts, and spend the evening walking the streets in the balmy air, stopping to take in some live music in one of the numerous bars if you are in the mood.

Marseilles

Another absolute gem in the South of France, the port town of Marseilles is known to many as the food capital of France. The restaurants and bars here are bursting with delightful and authentic Mediterranean cuisine and fresh seafood – giving perhaps a well-needed break from all the bread, cheese and pastry that makes French food so popular.

Marseilles’ most visited landmark is the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde – which you can reach by train. If it is a nice day though (which in the South of France, it probably will be!), you can also reach it via a gorgeously peaceful footpath that begins on the opposite side of town.

Normandy

For a slightly more sobering, but no less worthwhile, addition to your trip – you can head on over to Normandy. Towards Northern France, but to the West of Paris, stands this region with a proud and brutal history.

Here you can visit the tiny island of Mont St Michael, as well as Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, where Joan of Arc was executed in 1431. And of course, this region was host to the D-Day Normandy Landings towards the end of World War 2 – you can pay your respects to the hundreds of fallen soldiers from that fateful day at the Normandy American Cemetery & Memorial.

French Alps

Finally, head down to the South-East corner of France to the borders with Switzerland and Italy, to take in the glorious sights that the French Alps mountain range has to offer.

You can choose to see them from your train window or hostel room, or if you decide to Interrail or Eurail France-Switzerland, you can jump aboard the Glacier Express train which takes you right into the mountains.

It is a wonderfully scenic train ride, with 7.5 hours of unforgettable panoramic views of the mountains and surrounding areas.

That means sticking with your travelling partner if you have one, not taking rides from strangers at the airport, and avoiding situations which place you in a vulnerable position. You can get more detailed advice from our Interrail safety guide.
